Ladies become scared or worried when they miss their period for few days. Top on the list of what comes to mind during a missed period is pregnancy, especially if you had sex during your ovulation period.

Are you experiencing missed period and thinking you might be pregnant? Below, I present five tips to help you through a pregnancy scare.

1. Take a pregnancy test

The first thing to do is to take pregnancy test.

You can do this at home by buying a pregnancy test strip at a local pharmacy store. For accurate results, ensure you follow carefully the directions on the test kit.

If you prefer to get the test done at a medical laboratory or would like to confirm the results of the home pregnancy test, visit reputable test laboratory centre or simply consult your doctor.

2. Make a check on the calendar

That you are some days late does not necessarily equate to being pregnant.

To consider a period as “missed”, it must be six weeks after your last menstrual period, LMP.

Other reasons may be responsible for your missed period which include; changes in body weight and composition, increased levels of stress or other health conditions. Changes in period cycles may occur due to other reasons apart from pregnancy.

3. Evaluate if you use birth control methods effectively

Although you might have used birth control methods, but if they aren’t effectively used, your chance of getting pregnant increases.

Example is birth control pills; when taken daily at the same time, pills prevent pregnancy up to 100 percent of the time. But if you forget to take your pill at the same time every day, it is not as effective as described above.

Another example is use of condoms, if used correctly, there is a 99 percent chance of preventing pregnancy.

If a condom was used, consider if it was used the right way. In addition, consider if there were other birth control mishaps that may increase the chances of pregnancy.

4. Understand the truth about withdrawal method

One method of birth control is withdrawal during sexual intercourse. This method is however, characterized with high failure rate.

Majority of pre-ejaculate fluid
“pre-cum” had dead or no sperm at all and can’t by itself cause a pregnancy. So if it was on your hands and you touched her, you cannot make a baby that way.

However, if you had sex without protection and pulled out before ejaculation, you are at high risk because you may have leaked a little inside her.

Withdrawal is also called coitus interruptus or the “pull out method” and it requires great self-control, experience, and trust, and as such, it is pretty unreliable. It works, some of the time, by the man taking his penis out of the vagina before he ejaculates, limiting the chances of any sperm reaching the egg.

However, not all sperm are released at climax, some are a little more eager than that, so even though you don’t finish off, you could still finish up pregnant.

5. Talk to someone

If you are indeed pregnant and have questions about parenthood, talk to your healthcare provider, a trusted friend or family member. It is also important to talk to your man who should listen and encourage you.

Missed period does not necessarily mean you are pregnant but carefully review your actions before your menstrual period ceased.
